The principal effect of the Wisconsinan glaci-ation was to influence the distribution of the native North American earthworm fauna, with total extirpation of earthworms from soils directly affected by ice sheets and permafrost. Since the recession of the glacial ice sheets, climatic factors have been the primary drivers in the distribution.

At Cross Plains and for a number of miles north and south the late Wisconsinan ice sheet ground to a halt on the southwestern Wisconsin uplands, marking the east boundary of the Driftless Area with a young moraine.
